Case Study: Solved a Recurring Rat Problem in Wokingham
Laura in our office got a call from a customer over in Wokingham who was dealing with rats around their property. I headed out to get a proper eyes-on look at what was going on, track down how they were getting in, and figure out what was drawing them to the site.
The Findings
On my initial inspection, I found clear evidence of active rat activity and got the primary control treatment underway straight away.
However, dealing with rats isn't just about putting down bait or traps—if you don't find the entry point, they just come back. Drain faults are one of the most common ways rats get inside undetected, so I arranged for a CCTV drain survey to inspect the pipework below ground.
Sure enough, the camera picked up a structural defect in the drainage system that was giving the rats a direct run into the property.
The Fix
Drain Repair: The damaged section of pipework was repaired to seal off the structural access point.
Valve Installation: I installed a stainless steel non-return rat drain valve. This lets waste flow out freely while completely blocking rats from traveling up the system from the main sewer.
Follow-Up Visits: I returned for follow-up inspections to check bait take, monitor activity levels, and make sure the issue was completely cleared up.
Throughout the process, Laura kept the customer fully updated from the office and got all the follow-up visits booked in seamlessly.
The Result
This job was a textbook example of why root-cause investigation matters. If we had just treated the surface activity, the rats would have kept using that broken pipe to get back inside. By pairing the control treatment with the drain repair and non-return valve, we permanently closed off their entry route.
